Tantia Tope, was one of the most notable Indian freedom fighters and a general in the Revolt of 1857. Although he had no formal military training, he was probably the best and most effective of all the Indian generals during the revolt. antia Tope was in the service of the former peshwa of the Maratha Confederacy, Baji Rao, and of his adopted son Nana Sahib , who also actively participated in revolt.
During the siege of Kanpur, forces loyal to Nana Saheb launched an attack on the British forces in the area. Eventually, many British army personnel were taken prisoner or killed. Both- Nana Sahib and Tatya Tope fled after the arrival of the British reinforcements.
He also joined hands with ‘Rani Laxmibai’ in her fight against the British.
For over a year he continued a guerrilla campaign, aligning and realigning with various smaller rajas. However, he was not able to secure victiories due to the superior army of the British. According to several historical accounts, he was finally captured in April 1859 after being betrayed by an aide, and executed by the British on 18 April, following a short military trial.
