Write a short note on the Third Anglo-Mysore War.
The tension between Mysore and the English East India Company kept simmering even after the Treaty of Mangalore. Matters came to a head when Tipu Sultan mounted an attack on Travancore in 1789. Although the Governor-General Lord Cornwallis had clear instructions from the British government that he was to follow a non-interference policy in India, Travancore was a political ally of the Company and its only supplier of pepper. As a result, Cornwallis formed an alliance with the Marathas and the Nizam and waged the Third Anglo-Mysore War in 1790. It went on for two years, resulting in a defeat for Mysore.
