Write a short note on the First Anglo-Mysore War.
The British policy was to use the mutual jealousies of the Marathas, Nizam and Mysore to their advantage in the Deccan. In pursuance of this policy, the Company formed an alliance with the Nizam and Marathas against Mysore. However, Hyder Ali used his diplomatic skills and won over both these powers to his side, leaving the British without any allies. A war ensued between Mysore and the Company in which the latter suffered a heavy defeat and Madras was besieged. The victory increased the stock of Hyder Ali, and the British were compelled to sign a treaty proclaiming their active support in case of an attack on Mysore.
