Why is it essential to wash the precipitate with water before estimating it quantitatively?

Some of the reactant ions may be adsorbed or may adhere to the surface of the particles of the precipitate formed during an ionic reaction. In order to remove these reactant ions, the precipitate should be washed with water. If this is not done, an error may be produced during quantitative analysis.
