Why is cricket considered to be a colonial game?

Cricket remained a colonial game, limited to British
colonies i.e. countries that the British conquered and ruled. Here, cricket was popularised by white, settlers, or by local elites. The world’s first cricket club was formed in Hambledon in the 1760s.
The word ‘bat’ is an old English word that simply means stick or club. The organisation of cricket in England reflected the nature of English society. The rich who could afford to play it for pleasure were called Amateurs and the poor who played it for a living were called Professionals.
