Why has the caste system undergone changes in the modern time?

  1. Though the caste system has not disappeared completely, it has lost its grip. Political
leaders and social reformers like Jotiba Phule, Gandhiji, B.R. Ambedkar and Periyar Ramaswami Naicker advocated and worked to establish a society in which caste inequalities are absent.
  2. Due to the economic development, large scale urbanization, growth of literacy and occupational mobility, the caste system is not prevalent in urban India.
  3. The Constitution of India also prohibits caste based discrimination as the untouchability has been banned by the law and fundamental rights to equality ensure that everyone is equal in the eyes of law, irrespective of gender, caste and religion.
