Why do metals not evolve hydrogen gas with nitric acid?
Answer:
When metal reacts with nitric acid (HN03), hydrogen gas is not evolved. This is because HN03 is a . strong oxidising agent. It oxidises H2 produced to water and is itself reduced to any of the oxides of nitrogen (NsO, NO or N02). For example,

Conc. HNO3 is a very strong oxidising agent hence it oxidises the hydrogen to form water.
