Rivers are considered lifelines of human civilisation due to following reasons :

  1. Most of the ancient civilisations and cities have developed near the river banks as water was available for agriculture, domestic purposes and other needs.
  2. Rivers are used as a means of transport. People take their merchandise to far away places and travel to different places through rivers.
  3. Rivers provide hydel power that is essential to run many industries.
