The term “phalanx” is an extremely loose term which is often used to describe the hoplite formations of Classical Greece but in reality was used to describe any military formation which used close groups of soldiers holding spears. The earliest depiction of the phalanx formation can be seen in an inscription from Sumeria dating to the 25th century BC, although it is likely that it was in use before this time as a military formation.
