Who are the “White Haitians”? What is their origin?

White Haitians are individuals within Haiti who are of European descent. The large majority of this ethnic group is of French descent, although some are also descended from other European peoples, such as Irish, German, and Spanish. In the early 19th century, a slave uprising led to the killing of the large majority of White Haitians on the island due to their historic mistreatment of the other groups in the region. Today most White Haitians are descended from those who survived the massacre and make up around 5% of the country’s population (around half a million people).
