The Naacals are a fictional civilization that seem to have been invented by Augustus Le Plongeon in 1896 in order to create a story of Mayan missionaries travelling the world to spread their religion. The term became associated with mythical societies and civilizations with Latin America but there is no archaeological or literary evidence to suggest that they ever truly existed.
