For TV broadcast, space wave communication is used.
It is also called LOS communication. For satellite communication, a ground transmitter relays an uplink signal which is intercepted by a satellite and which uses a radio transponder to receive and relay signal back to a receiver.
Reason for both in frequencies >30 MHz are not reflected by ionosphere.
