The United States joined the Second World War in 1941 when Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Tensions between the United States and the Axis powers had been high for a number of years previous to this and the American government had been supplying Allied forces in Europe for a number of years. Much of the American population did not want to join in on the war, however, as they felt that it was not their duty to get involved in a war in Europe. This unprovoked attack, however, made war unavoidable and in December of 1941 they declared war on Japan and the Axis forces.
