Which country was known as the bread-basket of the world during 19th century? Explain the factors which made this possible?
USA was known as the bread-basket of the world during the 19th century. The different factors responsible for the expansion of agriculture in the USA were:
- The growth of urban population and export market encouraged farmers to produce more wheat.
- Expansion of railway network made it easy to transport the grain from the wheat growing regions to the Eastern coast of the USA for export. Introduction of machines helped in the production.
- During the First World War, Russian supply of wheat was cut off. Therefore, USA increased its production of food grains and supplied wheat throughout Europe.
