What were the causes of the Second Anglo-Maratha War?
- Peshwa Baji Rao II was a weak and indecisive ruler.
- After the death of Nana Phadnavis followed conflict, ambition and mutual rivalries among the Maratha chiefs.
- The lack of unity among the Maratha chiefs and the power struggle between them proved beneficial to the British.
- In 1802, Peshwa Baji Rao II, supported by Sindhia, was defeated by Holkar.
- Baji Rao II fled to Bassein where he signed a subsidiary treaty with the British for protection and support.
- Wellesley assumed that all the other Maratha chiefs would accept the subsidiary treaty.
- But Sindhia and Bhonsale declared war against the British in 1803 and were defeated.
