What were the causes of the Second Anglo-Maratha War?

  1. Peshwa Baji Rao II was a weak and indecisive ruler.
  2. After the death of Nana Phadnavis followed conflict, ambition and mutual rivalries among the Maratha chiefs.
  3. The lack of unity among the Maratha chiefs and the power struggle between them proved beneficial to the British.
  4. In 1802, Peshwa Baji Rao II, supported by Sindhia, was defeated by Holkar.
  5. Baji Rao II fled to Bassein where he signed a subsidiary treaty with the British for protection and support.
  6. Wellesley assumed that all the other Maratha chiefs would accept the subsidiary treaty.
  7. But Sindhia and Bhonsale declared war against the British in 1803 and were defeated.
