He feels that a man should always marry a girl of the same background. he criticises best sellers but has forgotten that his love story is similar to the book that he is reading. He sees a girl while he is travelling and instantly falls for her. He follows her and tries to win her hand in marriage. When he goes to meet Jessie’s father, Pescud realises that although they belong to an aristocratic family, they are poor and their palatial mansion is in ruins. Nevertheless, he tries his best to convince Col. Allyn, Jessie’s father, to allow her to marry his daughter.
