What has been the role of NREGA (MGNREGA) in creating employment for the people in India?

NREGA/MGNREGA has created employment opportunities for the people in India in the following ways:

  1. Investing in basic rural infrastructure like construction of dams and canals can lead to a lot of employment generation within the agriculture sector.
  2. Development in transportation and trade can provide productive employment to farmers.
  3. Promote and locate industries and services in semi-rural areas.
  4. For instance, setting up a dal mill to procure, process and sell in cities. Opening a cold storage and sell them when the price is good. Similarly, honey collection centers, fruit and vegetable processing units can provide employment.
