The convict received very inhuman treatment in prison, as the jailers whipped him, fed him with bad and stale food, made him sleep on cold hard boards etc. The convict felt hurt and afraid by this. Soon his spirit was broken by this inhumanity. He became just a number and forgot his early . life. He even lost the ability to pray, for he says that he lost his soul. This inhuman treatment turned him into an animal.
