What are the two major roles of carotenoids in photosynthesis?

Carotenoids have two major roles in photo-synthesis :
(a)Carotenoids absorb radiant energy in the mid region of visible spectrum.
(b)They pigment chlorophyll molecules from photo-oxidation (breakdown in strong light) by picking up nascent oxygen by means of their double bonds and change the same into harmless molecular state.
