What are the reasons behind uneven distribution of.population in India?

The reasons behind uneven distribution of population in India are as follows :

  1. Soil Fertility The Northern plains and Kerala in the South have flat plains with fertile soils and sufficient rainfall. So these states have high to very high population densities.

  2. Nature of the Terrain Assam and most of the Peninsular states have moderate population densities due to hilly, dissected and rocky nature of the terrain.

  3. Climatic Conditions Tough and unfavourable climatic conditions are primarily responsible for sparse population in the hot desert areas of Rajasthan and cold desert areas of Ladakh besides Lahaul Spiti valley, etc.
