What are the functions of stomata?

Stomata are the small pores present in the epidermal cells of leaf and stem.Stomata are mainly responsible for vital processes like photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration etc.
The stomata contain guard cells that regulate the opening and closing of the stomata. They are opened only when the plant needs carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.
In plants, carbon dioxide and oxygen are exchanged through the stomata by diffusion. Diffusion is the movement of a substance from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.
Special structures called stomata present in the epidermal cells help in gaseous exchange and also in getting rid of excess water by the process of transpiration.
