What are the charecter sketches of all charecters in Bishop’s Candle Stick?
It is not possible to provide detailed character sketches of all the characters in the play in the live chat due to time constraints. Below are the character sketches of the three main characters in the play:
The Bishop
The Bishop is a character with love and compassion. Like a true Christian, he is a kindhearted man who sees the convict as a human being and not as a criminal who has escaped from prison. He is used to sacrificing everything to help the needy. In fact, his sister is always upset with him as he goes to the extent of selling stuff from their home to help poor people.
When the convict barges into his house, he is not at all affected by the way he is roughly handled by the criminal. The convict is starving and asks for food, which the Bishop readily gives him. He believes that all human beings should be treated as equals. Although the convict steals the silver candle sticks from the Bishop’s house, the Bishop saves the convict by telling the Sergeant that the convict is his friend. He further says that the candlesticks are a gift to him and not stolen. The convict is touched by the actions of the Bishop and feels that the world still has something good left. This way, he has a change of heart.
Persome
Persome is the sister of the bishop. Unlike the bishop, she is not very considerate and sympathetic. She is frustrated with the excessively helpful nature of her brother since she believes that they are financially not in a good state to be helping people monetarily. She is cynical by nature and doubts the sufferings of others since she cannot see beyond her own woes. When she realizes that her brother sold her precious candlesticks to help someone in need, she throws a fit. Persome is a foil to the generous and caring character of the bishop.
