In Rutherfords model of an atom, the a-particles were first passed through a fine slit and then made to strike against the gold foil. The particles in small number got deflected from its path.
Thereafter, upon striking with zinc sulphide (ZnS) screen the particles produced twinkling flashes. These flashes are called scintillations.
