The graph below shows the progress of carbohydrate (------), protein (-----) and fat (-----) digestion in the human alimentary canal. Sections P to T represent different parts of the alimentary canal.

(i) Identify the parts of the alimentary canal that R and S represent.
(ii) Explain the graph for protein digestion.
(iii) How will digestion be affected, if the pancreas malfunctions?

(i) R —Stomach, S —Small intestine.
(ii) Protein digestion does not start in buccal cavity. It instead started in stomach which contains the protein digesting enzyme pepsin and is completed in the small intestine (R-T).
(iii) If the pancreas gets malfunctioned, then the digestion of starch, fats and proteins will be affected as pancreatic amylase, lipase and trypsinogen acting on them respectively will be absent.
