The electronic configuration of an element is 2, 8, 8, 1.
(i) State its group number and period number in the modern periodic table.
(ii) State whether this element is a metal or a non-metal.
Give reason for the justification of your answer in each case.

(i) Group number is 1 and Period number is 4.
(ii) It is a metal.

The element contain one valence electron and it will loose its one electron to complete its octet and form cation on itself. The element is present on the left hand side of the periodic table, metallic character decreases from left to right.
