Study the graph below. Explain how oxygen concentration is affected in the river, when sewage is discharged into it.
As per the graph, the concentration of dissolved oxygen gets dropped sharply on the discharge of sewage in the water body. This is because a large amount of oxygen is consumed by aerobic microorganisms that decompose the organic matter in river. When the amount of organic matter reduces, the amount of dissolved oxygen again increases.
