The air around the statues and monuments in India contains fairly high levels of oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. It is mainly due to a large number of industries and power plants around areas. Oxides of nitrogen and sulphur are acidic in nature. {{SO}_{2}} and
{{NO}_{2}} after oxidation and reaction with water are major contributors to acid rain.
This acid rain reacts with marble of statues and monuments causing damage to these.
