State ‘Fleming’s Right-Hand Rule’. With a labelled diagram, describe the working of on A.C electric generator.

When a straight conductor is moved inside a magnetic field, a current is induced inside the conductor. The direction of induced current is given by Fleming’s Right Hand Rule.

According to Fleming’s Right Hand Rule, if thumb points towards the direction of motion of conductor and the index finger points towards the direction of magnetic field, then the middle finger point toward the direction of induced current, provided all three are stretched mutually perpendicular to each other. An AC generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.

An AC generator works on the principle of electromagnetic induction, which states that when a moving conductor is placed inside magnetic field, an induced current is produced in it.

The AC generator consists of a coil ABCD connected to a galvanometer through slip rings. The galvanometer detects the current. If the coil is rotated anticlockwise, then arm AB of the coil moves downward arm CD of the coil moves upwards. The direction of induced current in these arms is given by Fleming’s Right Hand Rule.
