short note general service enlistment act

The General Service Enlistment was an Act which was passed by the Company in 1856. According to it, a sepoy had to travel overseas whenever required by the Company. It was believed by the Hindus that one could loose his caste status and religion if he crosses the seas. The sepoys thought the Company was trying to defame their religion. This was one of many reasons leading to the revolt of 1857.
