Project on Generating Awareness on Disaster Management
Disaster management is the ability of organizations and larger communities to manage resources and responsibilities in times of uncertainty. This includes preparedness, response and recovery from disasters that may be natural or societal. Natural disasters are usually weather events such as hurricanes or tornadoes. Examples of social disasters include stock market crashes or riots. There are many ways to educate the public and organizations about the importance of disaster management.
The Internet has provided a good opportunity to educate on disaster management. One of the most effective ways to capture attention and educate quickly is the use of memes , which are catchy images or videos widely shared across social networks. This would spread the message quickly through a mass audience.
TV and print advertising can also be an effective way to educate the public. Statistics, dramatizations or comedies can be used to demonstrate the need to be well prepared for an unknown future. The advantage of this campaign is the general public; however, using the DVR may make it less effective if the audience decides to go out of sync.
Promotions and games are another way to engage the public. Providing promotional events with free information and awards that support disaster education can attract large crowds. They are typically specific to regional disasters.
