There has been very low economic growth till 1980s. The economic exploitation of India by British not only ruined traditional handicrafts and discourage industrialisation, but also its exploitative policies led to widespread poverty and famine.
There are still more than 260 million people below the poverty line. It is the condition after implementing the high economic growth and various anti-poverty measures.
So, it is the biggest challenge of independent India to bring millions of its people out of poverty.
