It is rightly said that nobody is born a criminal. It is the circumstances which turn a person into a criminal. In the play, the convict himself accepted that he had changed from a man to a wild animal. Earlier the convict was ‘ a common man. It was extreme poverty that forced him to steal money to buy food for his ill wife.
For this, he had to spend ten years in prison. He had to go through different types of tortures in jail which changed him into an animal. Thus, an innocent man became a hardened criminal because of circumstances, an indifferent society and the law. The authorities should have patience, kindness, benevolence and compassion to humanely deal with criminals.
