Mention the essential material (chemicals) to prepare soap in the laboratory. Describe in brief the test of determining the nature (acidic/ alkaine) of the reaction mixture of saponification reaction.
(i) The materials (chemicals) essential to prepare soap in the laboratory are sodium chloride (common salt), cooking oil, sodium hydroxide and distilled water.
(ii) The nature of reaction mixture of saponification reaction is tested with the help of litmus paper. First, a red litmus paper is dipped in the suspension so formed. The red litmus paper changes its colour to blue. Then, a blue litmus paper is dipped in the suspension. The colour of blue litmus paper remains the same.
