Mention the chief features of the land revenue system of Sher Shah Suri

Land reforms were one of the most important achievements of Sher Shah Suri. These were

  1. He appointed officials for carefully surveying the land. The land was measured.
  2. Based on its fertility, the land was divided into three categories - good, middling and bad - and the annual average produce was calculated based on these three categories.
  3. The land revenue was fixed as one-third of the produce which could be paid by the farmers either in cash or in kind.
  4. Farmers could avail loans in case of destruction of crops during natural calamities.
  5. He discouraged the grant of jagirs and instead introduced the system of ‘patta’ (title agreement) and qabuliat (agreement of the land).

As a result of these measures, conditions of the peasants improved.
