It is important to increase the area under irrigation? why?
Most agriculture in India is rain-fed and is dependent on timely monsoons and sufficient rainfall spread through most of the growing season. So poor monsoons will lead to crop failure. Irrigation will ensure that the crops get water at the right stages during their growing season and thus increase the expected yields of any crop. Hence it is important to increase the area under irrigation.
