“Illiterate and unhealthy population are a liability for the economy”. Justify the statement.

The quality of population of a country depends upon some factors like, the literacy rate, health of a person indicated by life expectancy and skill formation acquired by the people. The quality of population ultimately decides the growth rate of the country. Illiterate and unhealthy population becomes a liability for the economy.

It can be justified in the following ways:

  1. Illiterate and unhealthy people are not capable to use land and capital efficiently.
  2. Their employment potential is low compared to literate and healthy people and they earn much less than literate and healthy people.
  3. An unhealthy person has less productivity and has to spend more money on his medical care than a healthy person.

Thus, illiterate and unhealthy people are a liability for the economy by making the country poorer and retard the development of it.
