“Illiterate and unhealthy population are a liability for the economy”. Justify the statement.
The quality of population of a country depends upon some factors like, the literacy rate, health of a person indicated by life expectancy and skill formation acquired by the people. The quality of population ultimately decides the growth rate of the country. Illiterate and unhealthy population becomes a liability for the economy.
It can be justified in the following ways:
- Illiterate and unhealthy people are not capable to use land and capital efficiently.
- Their employment potential is low compared to literate and healthy people and they earn much less than literate and healthy people.
- An unhealthy person has less productivity and has to spend more money on his medical care than a healthy person.
Thus, illiterate and unhealthy people are a liability for the economy by making the country poorer and retard the development of it.
