Corporal Turnbull was not justified in awarding Private Quelch the punishment he gave. If I had been in his shoes, I would not have spoilt Private Quelch’s career like that. Corporal Turnbull was a strict disciplinarian and did not tolerate any nonsense. When Private Quelch supplemented the Corporal’s information by saying that the grenade had forty-four segments, the Corporal didn’t appreciate that. He could not digest the fact that a trainee could be more intelligent and better informed than his superior. This shows that Corporal Turnbull did not have the values of tolerance and humility.
