How is an alloy made? List two proposes of making alloys and mention the constituents and two properties of each of the following alloys:
(i) Stainless steel
(ii) Brass.

Alloy: Alloy is a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals, or a metal and a non-metal.

The two purpose of making alloy:
(a) Steel alloy is quite hard in comparison to pure iron.
(b) The melting point of alloys may be higher or lower than the parent metal. Constituent and properties of given alloy:

(i) Stainless steel:
Constituent: Iron, Chromium and Nickel.
Properties:

  • It is veiy hard.
  • It does not rust.

(ii) Brass:
Constituent: Copper and Tin.
Properties:

  • It is very strong.
  • It is malleable and can be cast easily.
