Explain three important features of the Quit India Movement.
Following are three important features of the Quit India Movement:
- Even though important Congress leaders had been summarily arrested by the British Government, the masses actively involved themselves in the movement. Protest marches, demonstrations and strikes were organised on a wide scale. The Government, on its part, tried to undermine the nationalist ferment with lathi charges and firings.
- Egged on by government repression and brutality, the Indians began attacking government offices, buildings, railway and police stations.
- Telegraph lines and railway lines too were broken. The Government responded by deploying the army to suppress popular discontent. Eventually, thousands of people had to be killed before the Quit India Movement could be suppressed.
