Explain three factors that gave rise to consumer movement in India.
THE following factors gave birth to the consumer movement :
- Consumer movement originated as a social force in India with the necessity of protecting and promoting the interests of consumers against unethical and unfair trade practices.
- Rampant food shortage, hoarding, black marketing, adulteration of food and edible oil gave birth to the consumer movement in an organised form.
- Till 1970s, different organisations engaged in consumer welfare. They were largely engaged in writing articles and holding exhibitions. They formed consumer groups to look into the malpractices in ration shops and over crowding in the road passenger transport.
- In recent years, there has been an upsurge in number and awareness of consumer groups and consumer movement has started growing.
