Explain how the revolt of 1857 helped the development of Indian nationalism.
Although the revolt of 1857 failed in its main objective of uprooting the rule of the English East India Company, it did give rise to a definitive idea of the Indian nation. Although the rebel activity had remained localised, the sacrifice of the rebel leaders became a part of the folklore and people began to take pride in their achievements. As a result, slowly but surely, Indian masses spread over the large part of the hinterland began to identify themselves with the concept of one single nation and realised the importance of making sacrifices for the larger good.
