Explain any five factors that are responsible for the location of the jute mills in West Bengal, mainly along the banks of the ‘Hugh River’.
Factors responsible:
- Proximity of the jute producing areas. They are mainly lying in the Hugli basin.
- Inexpensive water transport with a good network of railways, road ways and water ways provide facilities for the movement of raw materials and finished goods.
- Abundance of water for processing raw jute.
- Availability of cheap labour from West Bengal and adjoining states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Utter Pradesh.
- Kolkata as a large urban centre provides marketing, banking and insurance facilities.
- Port facilities are available for the jute goods for export. Kolkata and Haldia ports provide services for export jute goods.
