Explain any five factors that are responsible for the location of the jute mills in West Bengal, mainly along the banks of the ‘Hugh River’.

Factors responsible:

  1. Proximity of the jute producing areas. They are mainly lying in the Hugli basin.
  2. Inexpensive water transport with a good network of railways, road ways and water ways provide facilities for the movement of raw materials and finished goods.
  3. Abundance of water for processing raw jute.
  4. Availability of cheap labour from West Bengal and adjoining states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Utter Pradesh.
  5. Kolkata as a large urban centre provides marketing, banking and insurance facilities.
  6. Port facilities are available for the jute goods for export. Kolkata and Haldia ports provide services for export jute goods.
