The government had passed certain laws and took several steps to prohibit pollution.
For example, in 1992, several tanneries in Kanpur were ordered to be close down by the Supreme Court as they were polluting the river Ganga.
In 1993, the Supreme Court passed an order for the closure of coal-based iron foundries around the historical heritage ‘Taj Mahal’. The marbles of monument were destroyed by the chemical emission in air, ‘Bhopal Gas Tragedy’ the most remembered accident. The Government of India enacted the Bhopal Gas Leak Disaster Act in 1985 enabling the victims to get claim and settled all respective issues under it.
