Chennai receives rainfall in winter. Explain the reason.

Chennai receives rainfall in winter. The reasons behind this are:

  1. Chennai lies in South-East coast of India and do not receives much rain during summers. This is because Western Ghats block the way of South-West monsoon winds of the Arabian sea branch. But Chennai gets more rainfall in winters from the North-East monsoon winds.
  2. The North-East winds blow over the Bay of Bengal and pick up moisture while crossing it. These winds then cause rainfall in Tamil Nadu coast during winters as these winds blow in that season thus Chennai receives rainfall in winter.
