Atomic number is considered to be more appropriate parameter than atomic mass for classification of elements in periodic table. Why?

Atomic number gives us the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. Atomic number increases by one when we move from one element to other but atomic mass do not vary regularly. Atomic number of every element is also fixed and that is why it is considered to be more appropriate parameter for the classification of elements than atomic masses.
