A magnetic compass shows a deflection near a current carrying wire

A magnetic compass shows a deflection near a current carrying wire. How will the deflection of the compass get affected if current in the wire is increased? Support your answer with reason.

(i) We observe, that the deflection of the needle of the magnetic compass increases. This is because the magnetic field strength due to a current carrying wire increases, when current in the wire is increased.

(ii) We observe, that the deflection of the needle of the magnetic compass decreases. This is because the magnetic field strength due to a current carrying wire decreases with the increase of the distance from the wire.
