  1. List two reasons for carbon forming a large number of compounds. Name the type of bonding found in most of its compounds. Why does carbon form compounds mainly by this kind of bonding?

  2. Give reason why the carbon compounds:
(i).generally, have low melting and boiling points.
(ii).do not conduct electricity in molten state.

Two reasons for carbon forming large number of compound are:
1.
(i) Catenation: Self linking of C-atoms with other C-atoms to form huge compound is called Catenation.
(ii) Tetravalency: Carbon has valency of four, it is capable of bonding with four other atoms of carbon or atoms of some other monovalent elements.

2.The bonding found is covalent bonds. Carbon-carbon bond is very strong which remains stable
.
3.
(i) Because their intermolecular forces of attraction are not very strong, that is why carbon compounds have low melting and boiling points.
(ii) Because their bonding does not give rise to any ions, that is why carbon compounds do not conduct electricity in molten state.
