Iodine is essential for the synthesis of thyroxine hormone secreted by the thyroid gland. Thyroxine regulates the metabolism of carbohydrate, protein and fat in our body and is responsible for the growth and development of body. Deficiency of iodine leads to hyposecretion of thyroxine hormone. It may disturb the metabolic and physical activities. The person might suffer from disorders like simple goitre. To avoid any disruption in the synthesis of thyroxine and maintaining the regular functioning of the body, consumption of iodised salt or iodine in food is very essential.
