Following are the features of Indian social dress code
(i) India had its own strict social codes of food and dress.
(ii) The caste system clearly defined what subordinate and dominant caste Hindu should dress.
These codes had the force of law and maintained by all.
(iii) Changes in the clothing styles threatened these norms and often created violent social reactions, e.g. Shanar women were attacked by upper castes for wearing a cloth across their upper bodies.
