(i) After the 1840s building activity intensified in the cities, opening up greater opportunities of employment.
(ii) Roads were widened, tunnels dug, drainage and sewers laid, rivers embanked, each activity required hundreds of labourers.
(iii) The number of workers employed in transport industry doubled in the 1840’s.
